Sustainable energy
sources are energy sources which are not expected to be depleted in a timeframe
relevant to the human race, and which therefore contribute to the sustainability
of all species. Sustainable energy sources are most often regarded as including all renewable sources, such as solar power, wind power, wave power, geothermal power, tidal power and others. HEAT PUMPS Heat pumps represent the most efficient way of heating and cooling properties using renewable energy. The energy source is thermal energy which is taken from the ground or the air outside. Heat pumps can be used in both existing and new built properties. The pay back time for investing in a heat pump can vary depending on the circumstances however, in the long term you will find that it is a very good investment. Not only will you be less dependent on increasing energy prices, you will be making a big difference in the amount of carbon emitted. Heat pumps work like refrigerators in reverse and take heat from the ground, air or water, ground source being the most common. They will provide 3 to 4 kw/hrs of heat for each 1 kw of electricity when used for space heating with an underfloor system. If there is a generous amount of space outside the property, and the soil is relatively easy to dig, the best option would be to dig a horizontal ground loop. If the property space is limited or if the building is located on a rock, the best option is to drill a bore hole. If the property is located near a lake, pond or another source of water, the collector can be installed on the bottom of the waterbed. This can also work if you an existing well with a good amount of groundwater flow. |
